Thanks Brian & John for your efforts at "Brentwood Towers" oil getting the magazine together. It was really nice to see the late Alastair Brown on the front cover, which brought back some fond memories. Also the late Robin Allen, although I never met Robin, it was good to put a face to the name.

One nice little tweak you can make to the Comodo stalk is to add a modern electronic indicator relay, and still keep the Temsu "clic clac" device as an audible warning, but the best way to make the Comodo last is reduce the current across the contacts by fitting relays to the headlights as well. I've done this and the flaky tired Comodo has been restored. Some of the later versions have a headlight flashing function too.

Once again I would like to say thanks to John and Brian for managing to get the newsletter
out in this time of unease around the world.
My CT languishes under a tarpaulin in the front garden awaiting an engine, hopefully some time this year.
I may be moving home again this year, our bungalow is on the market, so yet another trailer
job will be needed to move the car !
Thanks again guys.
13/09/1954 Panhard Dyna Z1 LHD.

Just as the first lockdown was starting to lift, the car arrived by trailer on the 5th July complete with a huge quantity of spares of which sadly 95% are for the later models. You may remember I sent out the first 2 photos below fanfaring its arrival.
As previously mentioned a lot of items had been removed to facilitate the body and paintwork and not all had been refitted. The wiring loom had been separated and has had to have an extension added behind the bulkhead. New fuse and relay board made up and fitted (no fuses on original Panhard wiring!) lighting multiswitch has had to be replaced as bizarlly it had stopped working whilst at rest!
Biggest find was that the bodywork damage noted previously on the o/s/f bulkhead had unfortunatelyextended to the suspension. The top leaf spring was bent (compare photos nos 3 n/s & 4 o/s) plus the drive shaft had been affected. Used parts have been traced and fitted and a full geometry check will be carried out.

It fired up and ran for the first time in approx 40 years on Friday 23rd October

Tuesday 3rd November the car was briefly road tested. A couple of minor faults cured, noisy speedo and a gearlinkage adjustment, but two major faults remain. The brakes require pressure bleeding, as despite two litres of fluid bled through the system, they remain poor. A(n) horrendous clutch judder will need to be looked at despite a new clutch assy in place!?

Wednesday 4th Nov the car was collected by the owner, on the same trailer, and over the next 6 months the interior trim will be finished before returning for the clutch repair. It is getting cold now!!

There will be teething problems. It would be too much to expect everything to work as it should without some adjustments. It is after all a Panhard!

Look out for part 7 in a few months!
This one was bought by friends living in France from the estate of the late Frank Holden in Wales. It was a "genuine barn find!" and still on French plates. My job was to get it road worthy but not to over restore.
The engine and g/box had been overhauled but needed fitting. The tyres, brakes and exhaust all needed attention. Luckily the front subframe was still servicable
It arrived here early in 2013. The brief was to make the car run with no attention to the bodywork! Other than a wipe over with WD40 the car was left "dans son jus" as the French say! The car was drivable by April and on the 8th it was driven to JP Exhausts in Macclesfield (now in Congleton) for an exhaust estimate, then returned to them on 26th for a full system in S/S to be fabricated and fitted. A major fault developed very soon, a serious clutch judder. This was found to be due to a leak on the crankshaft rear main bearing finding its way into the clutch housing. Engine out again! By May 2013 it was mobile again and drove faultlessly (as well as they do!) the 90miles to Leebotwood, Church Stretton, to have the seats refurbished. It broke down on collection (see next episode). After the breakdown repair it finally left UK for France by trailer in early 2015 and passed a French "Controle Technique" (MOT) within days of its return.
Part five.
13/09/1954 Panhard Dyna Z1 LHD.

Then life got in the way!
The owner bought a house for renovation in the Telford area and apart from one or two small jobs the car was left virtually untouched (?) after the initial spurt on it's return from the bodyshop. I had also started working two month stints in summer in Lyon which didn't help!

In May/June 2013, I dropped another Z1 down in Shrewsbury for the seats to be restored. (Erstwhile Panhardist may recall this one was part of the late Frank Holden's collection.) This was picked up in Nov 2014 and promptly broke down with a broken torsion bar valve spring on the way back. It had to be recovered home Along with the broken torsion bar, the exhaust valve had kissed the piston, or vice-versa, and was bent. The piston survived the contact OK.

You will note the ugly trailer lighting board on the car. This is because the original indicators and tail lights (+ parking light) are situated in the rear hip lights and are none too bright, or easy to spot! Similar situation with the front scuttle lights carrying the front indicators and parking light.
.
For a variety of reasons, the return of the green Z1 to my house, was delayed in 2017, 2018, & 2019 until it was finally planned for April 2020, but then the virus lockdown scuppered that, before finally arriving on 5th July .
As you can imagine after 9 years away a lot of the initial work will have to be re-checked, not least the wiring loom which had been part dismantled to facilitate the body and paint repairs.
As of today I am within a week or so of completing my side of the job, teething problems and weather not withstanding!

to be continued

The photos are of the broken down Z1. The recovery truck driver was an Amy Winehouse lookalike! I will post details and photos of this car at a later date!
By February 2012, and onward into March, the car body had been repaired and then re painted in the original green colour. Not sure of the actual colour name, but Mushy Pea Green is close! The re-assembly of the parts removed to carry out the repairs was nearing completion. Photos again courtesy of Neville.
Shortly after completion, the car was returned to its home near Shrewsbury and the interior and trim replacement was started. By Sept 2012 the car was at the stage shown in the last two photos, with the majority of the interior still to tackle.
13/09/1954 Panhard Dyna Z1 LHD

The car arrived here in Sunny Stockport by transporter on 13th December 2010, and after a review of the work needed a start was made on its strip down, and an extensive list made of the mechanical and electrical work needed. Everything needed attention! Engine, gearbox, exhaust, all electrcal componets, inc rewire, total retrim, brakes, tyres and of course the body, which whilst not rusty, had certainly seen a bit of life!
Evidence of previous rodent habitation was rife! Old rags, food etc had been dragged into the bulkhead and front steel chassis member. The latter had completely rotted through as a result, and luckily a very rare replacement was obtained via the Dutch Panhard club,
The original and spare engines were u/s so the decision was made to fit the later M5 (PL17) unit but retaining the original "bobbin" type front engine mountings.
By May 2011 I had virtually completed my work ie subframe fitted, wiring attended to, engine and box looked at, brakes replaced but not bled, in fact most of the mechanical work.
The car was then transported back to Shrewsbury to await a "slot" in the chosen body and paint shop.
It would in fact be late 2011 early 2012 before it finally went in for body and paint.

13/09/1954 Panhard Dyna Z1 LHD

It is believed the car was bought new by Air Marshal Sir Philip Babbington, KCB, MC, AFC. RAF retired 1944. (wikipedia) We had thought it was bought in Germany whilst still on active duty, but as he retired in 1944 it is more likely the car was a private import (uncomfirmed) as Panhard were not sold in the UK at that time, but probably backed up by its September 1954 UK registration.

It must have sold on fairly soon in its life, as by 1998 the 2nd owner had owned it for over 40 years (see advert below) but sadly had been, laterley, very badly neglected after a gearbox problem, and left in a garden in Perivale Middlesex. It was discovered, and the advert below placed in the UK Panhard club magazine in September 1998. There were no immediate takers and so two of the Panhard club members rescued it to avoid its scrapping.

A short time elapsed in their care and after much deliberation on my part, I had always fancied an all alloy bodied model, despite them being very fragile and easily dented, I acquired it, borrowed a car, hired a trailer and brought it back north. It was parked in a barn near Leyland where my brother in law, Peter, painted the picture below. I did nothing with it and after about six months or so, I finally decided to move it on again.
The current owner tucked it away in another barn down near Shrewsbury. The final two photographs were taken December 2010 some 12 years after I passed it on. I had been contacted to come and have look, by the chap who got it from me, with a view to carrying out the mechanical and electrical renovation. You will have spotted in the photo below there is a slight glimpse of another Panhard, a late model 24ct, so it then became a choice of which one do we start first..................the Dyna won!...................

Thanks for the magazine Brian (and John )
I had to smile when I saw the picture of the Paris - Dakar race car.
The yellow Dyna behind was "Buttercup" with me and Denise in Paris. I think we were at the company's 90th Anniversary rally at Porte Maillot, where there is a monument to Panhard et Levassor showing the famous "Number 5" car in anger .

I was sorry to read about George's passing, a special guy, I remember visiting Swindon a long time ago and looking at his Dyna. I wish the family well at this sad time in their lives.

Also sorry to read about John Bellwood's engine, but luckily he wasn't far from home. I had a similar occurrence in Buttercup once. We were on our way home from a rally up North when there was an almighty clatter. I dipped the clutch straight away and the noise stopped, however when I let it back in it started again. I dipped the clutch again, noise stopped, and slowly released it. No more noise and we continued home at a leisurely pace. Next morning I removed the sump, cleaned out all the bits from a broken skirt, refilled with fresh oil and went straight off to a rally in Kent ! I can't remember how long the engine ran after that, but I was using the car for work every day , so it was some while ! Interesting to read about the follower, not seen that happen before.

Lastly , well done to John Jordan , he is doing a great job, much better than my attempt ! lol
